Emotional awareness means being able to recognise emotions that we experience, understand the feelings associated with those emotions, and understand what we think and do as a result, in other words how we react. Emotion is an important player, after all it’s what drives us as human beings. Emotion is not something we can switch on and off, it’s not something we can force ourselves to embrace.


It simply is. In any given situation we either feel it or we don’t. We have to understand our emotions, not only how, but why, we react to them the way we do. Then, and only then, can we regulate and control those reactions. Emotional Awareness is a big part of Self Awareness.


We can’t have one without the other. It’s all about our ability to recognise our own emotions, and their effects on us. Emotions are important and it pays to be aware of our own and others’ feelings. Highly Emotionally Intelligent people do this all the time. Like any other, it is a skill that can be developed and which is well worth acquiring.
